Cheyney, Pa. - The Millersville football team put together its best offensive showing of the season, and the defense rose to the occasion late to spoil Cheyney's homecoming Saturday afternoon by a 47-36 score.
The Marauders (2-5, 1-3 PSAC East) racked up a season-best 400 yards of offense, and the 47 points were the most scored by a Millersville team since hanging 48 against Cheyney on Oct. 11, 2008. The two-headed rushing attack of senior Brad Lantz and Cardoza Jacks combined for 158 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries, and Jamal Smith provided the air support, hauling in seven catches for 87 yards and two touchdowns.
With the win, the Marauders snapped a five-game skid and extended its streak over Cheyney to 26 consecutive victories.
The win didn't come easily, though, as the Wolves (0-7, 0-4 PSAC East), led by quarterback Angel Rodriguez, matched Millersville's offensive display with 492 yards of offense of their own including 289 on the ground. Rodriguez alone accumulated four touchdowns and 395 yards of total offense as he rushed for 207 and completed 11-of-15 passes for 188.
But as the two offensive units traded punches, it was Cheyney that committed the untimely mistakes, losing four fumbles and turning the ball over three times on downs. The Marauders also registered a season-high four sacks, two of which came from Antwain Brown-Barnes.
It was clear from the outset that it would be a high-scoring affair. Millersville and Cheyney entered the game ranked last and second to last respectively among PSAC teams in scoring defense. The lead changed hands nine times, but after Rodriguez threw a TD pass with 12:47 to go in the fourth, the Marauders' offense responded with a pair of time consuming scoring drives that led to 14 unanswered points, and the defense did its part by holding Cheyney to four first downs while sacking Rodriguez three times in the final drive alone.
Cheyney scored the game's first points when Rodriguez scampered 42 yards for a touchdown just 2:21 into the game. Millersville wasted no time answering back. Only one minute and eight seconds following Rodriguez's run, Bill Shirk and Lou Brown hooked up for a 42-yard touchdown strike, Millersville's longest pass play of the season.
Freshman defensive back Christian Rodriguez gave the Marauders a lead on an unconventional score when he picked up a fumble and raced 58 yards for a touchdown.
Rodriguez scored twice more before the half on runs of 60 and 16 yards, but Shirk found Smith twice as well, including a five-yard touchdown hook-up that capped a 13-play, 90-yard drive with just over a minute left in the half giving Millersville a 26-21 advantage.
Rodriguez kept his Wolves close. On the first drive on the third quarter, he broke a touchdown run for 76 yards, pushing Cheyney on top, 28-26. Cheyney forced the Marauders to punt, but the Wolves' next possession ended in disaster when a fumble on fourth down gave Millersville the ball on the Cheyney 26. It took just 1:06 for Lantz to score his first TD of the game and give the lead back to the Marauders.
Cheyney responded early in the fourth when Rodriguez threw his first TD pass of the game. The Marauders, offense, however, delivered an 11-play, 89-yard drive that culminated in Lantz's second TD run of the game. That put the Marauders in front 40-36, and it was a lead they would not relinquish again.
Millersville's defense forced Cheyney to turn the ball over on downs twice more in the final period, and Jacks tacked on a four-yard touchdown run for insurance.
Shirk finished the game 15-of-30 for 225 yards. He also threw three touchdowns for the first time this season and the first time since Oct. 18, 2008. Along with Smith's seven catches, Brown added three catches for a career high 83 yards and his first career touchdown.
Lantz's 73 yards put him at 2,351 for his career and into fifth place on the school's all-time rushing list. Jacks, who went for 274 a year ago against Cheyney, totaled 85 Saturday.
Defensively, Chad Miller and Ryan Christian led the team with eight stops apiece. Miller also made 2.5 tackles for loss. Jamie Thomas and Shane Gross also joined Brown-Barnes with sacks.
Millersville will look to put together back-to-back wins for the first time since the end of the 2006 season next Saturday at home against C.W. Post. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
