Millersville, Pennsylvania - Millersville University junior pitcher
Reid Anderson became the second Marauder in as many days selected in the MLB First Year Player Draft. The right-hander was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 17th round.
Anderson was selected with the 519th overall pick. It marked the first time in Millersville history that two players were drafted in the same season. Including
Brandon Miller, the Marauders have now lost two juniors to the draft.
"I was in the computer room with my parents watching the draft," said Anderson. "I got a text for Coach (Jon) Shehan, and then I heard my name in the background. I didn't get a call right away from the team, but I had talked to them last night. They told me they were going to try to take me. When it happened I was a little bit surprised but super excited."
Anderson is only in his second season as a pitcher. He was recruited to Millersville as an outfielder but moved to the bullpen in 2015. In 2016, he became the team's No. 4 starter. He also pitched in the competitive Coastal Plains League during the summer of 2015. He impressed scouts with his fastball and slider. Anderson is also attractive because of the low mileage on his arm. He pitched just 89 innings in two seasons with the Marauders.
"Brian Matthews was the scout, a local guy," said Shehan. He had seen Reid a couple times. Reid really came into his own this year. His upside is tremendous. He has the best live arm on our team and a really good fastball with a slider. I'm not sure if they will use him as a reliever or starter but I think he will eventually be a closer, short guy in pro ball."
Anderson went 8-1 with a 3.78 in his first and only season as a starter. He struck out 65 in 89 innings and gave up just 77 hits. He owned a batting average against of .232. He was named All-PSAC East Second Team. Anderson went through a stretch of five consecutive PSAC East starts in which he pitched at least five innings and did not allow more than four hits. He was outstanding out of the bullpen in the NCAA Division II Championship, making three appearances, totaling 5 1/3 innings, alloing just three hits while striking out four.
"It is really exciting," said Anderson. "Being drafted has been a dream of mine since I've been a kid. The preparation from the awesome coaches we have at Millersville has prepared me for this level. Coach Shehan and Coach
Ryan Forrest do a great job preparing us for tough situations. I'm excited to get started. I know I can grow a lot as a pitcher."
