The Millersville football team opens the 2010 season Saturday, Sept. 4 against a non-conference opponent, the Assumption Greyhounds out of the Northeast-10 Conference. This will be the second meeting all-time between the Marauders and Greyhounds. The first meeting took place last season in Worcester, Mass., with a 31-28 victory for the Marauders.

The Millersville Marauders open the 2010 season Saturday, Sept. 4 at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium against Assumption College. Game time is scheduled for 12 p.m. It is the first time since 2006 that the Marauders have opened the season at home.

When the Millersville offense takes the field for the first time on Sept. 4, only one running back on the roster will have recorded a carry with the Marauders. And that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Millersville's 2010 wide receivers have it all: speed, size, hands, experience and youthful talent. It is easily the most skilled group of Greg Colby's tenure and senior Jamal Smith could challenge some significant school records. The biggest problem so far in camp is getting them all on the field at the same time.

It all starts up front. The only way Millersville’s offense will play up to its abilities is if the offensive line can prove serviceable and the tight ends continue to improve production. The Marauder coaching staff believes Greg Frantz is one of the top tight ends in the PSAC, but the offensive line is searching for new starters among newcomers and even on the other side of the ball.

You might be surprised to know that senior Bill Shirk enters the 2010 season ranked eighth on Millersville's all-time passing list and is first among active PSAC quarterbacks in passing yards. Quietly, Shirk has put together two solid seasons as quarterback of the Marauders. Now, as a third-year starter, he has the opportunity to leave his own mark on the program's history and return it to prominence.

Specialists (punters, kickers, long snappers and returners) may only be on the field for a handful of plays each game. But each is expected to perform his duty flawlessly, and an extra point, a field goal, or change of field position may make the difference between a win and a loss.

Millersville football has a history of producing outstanding linebackers. From 1970-2005, Marauder 'backers combined for 38 All-PSAC East selections--an average of more than one per season. But since Joe Hollister was named PSAC East Defensive Player of the Year in 2004, only two Marauders have earned all-conference honors and only Chris Donati (2005) was a first team honoree. The 2010 linebackers are looking to return the swagger to the position.
