Marauders Earn Split With East Stroudsburg on Senior Day
Emily Flieger Pitching
Box Scores: Game 1 / Game 2

Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville softball team got an outstanding performance to take game one 5-4 and put a dent in East Stroudsburg’s PSAC playoff hopes, but the Warriors fought back to claim game two by a score of 5-3 at the Millersville University Softball Field on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Emily Flieger (5-1) threw 5.2 innings and struck out four, as the Marauders (23-24, 2-14) tried to send their seniors out with the gift of wins. Lindsay Hosier opened the scoring for MU in the bottom of the first with a lead-off home run, her third long ball of the season. Shaina Briel followed with a double and scored to make it 2-0 on Kelly Fitzgerald’s RBI-single.

East Stroudsburg (20-19, 6-10) tied the game with a run in the third and another in the fourth, but Millersville responded with a 3-run fifth inning. Amy Kossyk started the inning with her fourth homer of the season and Casey Coker also belted a 2-run shot in the inning.

ESU answered with two in the sixth, but Brittany Peterson came on in relief for MU to shut down the Warriors the rest of the way and pick up the save. Jennifer Bensinger took the loss for ESU, giving up all five runs over 4.2 innings.

In game two, the visitors got an RBI-single from Rachel Gieringer and an unearned run in the second to jump out to a quick 2-0 lead. Gieringer drove in another run in the third to make it 3-0. The Warriors ran their lead to 5-0 in the fourth behind an RBI-single from Brittany Racek and a sacrifice fly by Amanda Feist.

Millersville would make it interesting in the seventh, however, thanks to some East Stroudsburg defensive miscues. The Marauders used the help of four errors to score three runs, but ESU's Jackie Battaglino got Trisha Johnson to ground out to end the game.

Kossyk had a 3-for-3 effort in game two, while Briel collected two hits in defeat. Courtney Eckman (9-9) suffered the tough defeat, giving up two runs (one earned) in two innings of work.

Millersville plays its fourth doubleheader in four days tomorrow afternoon at Lock Haven. The Marauders will return home to wrap up the regular season with non-conference opponent Shepherd on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
