Championship Saturday begins at 11 a.m. with the men's pole vault, men's discus and women's triple jump. Track events start at 12:30 p.m. Drawing the meet to a close is the men's 4x400-meter relay final and the awards ceremony at 4:15 p.m.
General admission for Friday or Saturday is $7 for adults and $2 for students. Students with PSACs school I.D. are admitted free of charge. Fans interested in attending the championships on Friday and Saturday can purchase a two-day pass for $12.
Slippery Rock enters as the defending champion on both the men and women's sides. In 2008, The Rock ran away with the women's team title, scoring 203.5 points while the runner-up, Lock Haven, managed 111. The men's chase was much tighter. Slippery Rock totaled 124.5 points and Lock Haven (108) and Shippensburg (101.5) finished close behind.
Six women athletes have an opportunity to defend their 2008 individual titles. Leading the group is Millersville senior Priscilla Jennings, who was named PSAC Outdoor Women's Co-Athlete of the Meet in 2008 after winning the 800-meter run, the 1,500-meter run and the 3,000-meter run. Jennings' time of 2:10.22 in the 800 was a meet record as well.
Jennings comes into the championships with the PSAC's top qualifying marks in the 800 and 5,000 but has not run the 3,000 this year. She also qualified fourth in the 1,500 with a time of 4:31.74.
While Jennings has posted some impressive times, she will receive some stiff competition. In the 800, Shippensburg's Mary Dell, who finished as the runner-up in 2008, posted a qualifying mark of 2:11.13 this year, which is just off of Jennings' 2:10.67. Joanna Horstmann of Kutztown and Shala Simms of Lock Haven—both top five finishers last year—are also expected to be in the field.
Shippensburg boasts the three top qualifiers in the 1,500. Looking to take Jennings' crown is freshman standout Neely Spence, who has the PSAC's top qualifying mark at 4:28.91. Spence took the conference by storm at the indoor championships when she took PSAC Most Valuable Track Athlete honor and won the 3,000 and mile. Her victory in the mile came by 0.19 seconds over Jennings. Spence's teammates Abigail Huber and Dell enter the meet ranked second and third respectively.
Huber and Spence are also the top two qualifiers in the 3,000. Huber has the best time at 10:03.48, and Spence is not far behind at 10:04.77.
Spence will also be in the mix in the 5,000. She is ranked second behind Jennings, who smashed the Millersville record earlier this year at the Penn Relays with a time of 16:29.05. Spence's best mark is 16:38.81. Defending champion in the 5,000, Jen Harpp of Slippery Rock, will also contend. Her best time of 2009 came at the Penn Relays as well (16:51.65).
The favorite in the women's high jump is back for the 2009 championships. Slippery Rock sophomore Whitney Hendershot edged fellow sophomore Lynn Mayer one year ago. In 2009, however, Hendershot has posted the conference's best jump at 5-10, which is two inches better than Lock Haven's Chelsea Morse (third place in 2008) and three inches higher than Mayer.
2008 long jump champion Cassie Snider of Lock Haven won the event with a mark of 17-11 3/4. Snider is currently ranked ninth in the PSAC at 17-8.25. Shippensburg freshman Lauren Redington is a clear threat to Snider's crown. On May 2, Snider posted the best mark of the season at 19-0 3/4.
Shippensburg's Erica Hess will defend her crown in the 400-meter dash. She edged Slippery Rock's Lacey Cochran in 2008 with a time of 55.68. Hess has the best time in the PSAC again this year at 56.16, but Cochran is just off the pace at 56.56.
Four of the top six finishers in the 400-meter hurdles are back in 2009. Danielle Malay of California (Pa.) won the 2008 event with a time of 1:01.07. Slippery Rock sophomore Amanda Seigworth, the 2008 runner-up, posted the PSAC's standard this spring at 1:00.54. Teammate Allison Smith (third) and Shippensburg's Michelle Morcum (sixth) will also be in the mix.
East Stroudsburg's Paul Wagner highlights the returning champions on the men's side. Wager was the PSAC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Meet in 2008, winning the hammer throw with a PSAC Championship record toss of 179-5. He also placed fifth in the discus and 12th in the shot put.
Wagner, though, looks stronger heading into the 2009 meet. Earlier this spring, Wagner crushed the all-time PSAC outdoor record in the hammer by nearly five feet with a throw of 190-7. He should also contend in the discus where is currently ranked third. He is also improved in the shot put where he has posted the league's second-best distance at 50-7.5.
Challenging Wagner's field athlete of the meet status will be Mansfield's Mike Gray. Gray is the returning champion in the discus and runner-up in the shot put. Gray enters the discus once again as the favorite after his 165-4 toss at the Cornell Invitational topped Kutztown's Jason Rebuck's best throw of 163-11. Rebuck finished in fourth at the 2008 meet.
Gray missed first place in the 2008 shot put event by six inches, but he qualified first for the 2009 meet at 53-5.75—nearly three inches better than Wagner.
2008 triple jump champion, Drew Miller of East Stroudsburg, is also back to defend is crown. He won the event with a leap of 48-5 1/2. His 2009 mark of 47-7 3/4 is currently best in the PSAC.
East Stroudsburg's Matthew Gallup returns as the title winner in the pole vault after besting the field by six inches as a sophomore in 2008. So far in 2009, Gallup's best vault of 16-6 3/4 is six inches better than the nearest competitor.
Along with the four returning champions, there are several athletes that finished as the runner-up a year ago.
Slippery Rock's Mike Rose and Shippensburg's Don Graybill placed second and third respectively in last year's decathlon and the two are the favorites heading into the PSAC Championships. Rose's score of 6322.0 is the best in the PSAC this year.
Slippery Rock distance specialist Jeff Weiss was runner-up in the 10,000 and the 5,000 in 2008, and he ranks second in both events this year as well. The only runner that ranked higher is California (Pa.) senior Chris Clark. Clark's 29:03.10 mark in the 10,000 is among the best in the nation and set the PSAC record. His 13:58.51 time in the 5,000 is also tops in the conference.
East Stroudsburg junior Andrew McCloskey finished as the runner-up and the only non-senior in the top four of last year's 200-meter dash. He owns the PSAC's best time in the spring of 2009 as well, running a 21.35.
Nick Hilton of Lock Haven is also looking to move from second to first. He finished runner-up to Shippensburg's Bryan Beegle in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 2008. Hilton boasts the best time in the PSAC at 9:14.84 this year with Millersville junior James Boyer just behind.
