Millersville, Pa. — The 24th-ranked Millersville women's basketball team debuted at seventh in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region rankings, announced late on Wednesday.
The Marauders (14-4, 4-1 PSAC East) had won seven in a row up until last night, but their 14-3 record as of last Sunday is accounted for in the first regional rankings of the season. The regional rankings determine which teams from each region make the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Tournament. The top eight teams from each region will comprise the 64-team field.
Gannon, of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division, holds the top spot in the rankings with a 20-0 record. Fellow PSAC West member, California (Pa.), is second. Millersville beat California, ranked 10th at the time, 53-52 in California on Jan. 3.
The rankings include a pair of West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) teams in Virginia State (third) and Glenville State (sixth). The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) also placed two teams in the top eight with Bowie State (fifth) and Shaw (eighth). The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has a lone representative in West Liberty (fourth).
Last season the Marauders finished fifth in the regional rankings, drawing Charleston (W.Va.) in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Tournament, a game in which MU fell, 59-49.
Millersville looks to rebound from its latest defeat on Saturday when it travels to Mansfield for a 1 p.m. start.
