Hampton, Va. - Shane Smith and
Mike Greck continued to roll as a short-handed Millersville wrestling team took fourth place in the eight-team field at Saturday's Virginia Duals.
The Marauders (2-4-1) went 2-2 in the tournament, and picked up its second win Saturday by topping Stevens Tech 24-18. The Marauders managed the win despite wrestling without the services of 157-pound
Jarrett Hostetter, 165-pound
Jeremy Brooks and 197-pound
Ray Bennett--all three former national qualifiers.
With the victory, the Marauders advanced to the third-place match but was edged by SUNY-Brockport for the second straight day, 27-17.
Smith and Greck both went 2-0 on the day and 4-0 in the tournament to extend their winning streaks to five.
Justin Fegley (133) got the Marauders on the board against Stevens Tech with a 5-0 decision. Greck followed with by pinning Kyle Brisson in 3:56 at 141 pounds.
J.J. Lester boosted the lead with a 11-4 decision at 149.
Steve Hess, wrestling in place of Hostetter, edged Charles Favia by a 3-2 decision.
The Marauders were forced to forfeit 165, but Smith scored a pin at 2:21 at 174. Stevens Tech won two of the final three matches, but
Josh Marquard's 3-2 decision at 197 was enough to clinch the victory.
In the third-place match, Fegley again picked up Millersville's first points by recording the first pin of his career. He notched it at the 4:58 mark. Greck won 4-0, and Lester grabbed his second win of the day with a 5-3 decision. Smith rolled to a 17-2 technical fall at 174, but the Marauders failed to register a point in the final three bouts and fell by just 10 points.
The Marauders host Duquesne Friday, Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m. The match will be recorded by MUTV and broadcast tape delayed on Blue Ridge Cable 11 on Jan. 20 at 8 p.m., and on Comcast channels in Berks, Lancaster and Lebanon counties on Jan. 21 at 8 p.m.
