Gannon (33-0), ranked No. 1 and the only remaining unbeaten team in Division II, defeated California (23-7) 77-68 Saturday evening to win its first PSAC Championship and clinch the automatic berth from the PSAC. Millersville defeated California 53-52 on Jan. 3.
Entering the week, the Marauders were behind only Gannon and California (Pa.). Only Gannon has more region victories than the Marauders. The automatic qualifier from the WVIAC is Fairmont State, which toppled West Liberty in the conference championship game. West Liberty was ranked fourth in the most recent region ranking while Fairmont State was not in the top 10. Fayetteville State is also in the field after defeating Bowie State in the CIAA Championship.
The NCAA is employing a new set-up to the regional this year. Instead of sending all eight teams to the No. 1 seed for the first round, it divided the region into two sites. The No. 1 seed will host the No. 8, No. 4 and No. 4 seeds for the first two rounds, and the second seed will host the No. 7, No. 3 and No. 6 seeds. The region championship game will be played at the highest remaining seed.
The Atlantic Region winner advances to the Elite Eight, which begins on March 23 and continues through March 26 in St. Joseph, Missouri. Click
