Millersville, Pa. — The Millersville softball team held its first ever "Going to Bat For Our Wounded Soldiers" event on Saturday, April 10, and the outpouring of support and donations for our troops is something head coach Kathy Cummings has no parallel for during her 17 seasons with the program.
"I'm so proud to have been involved with my team in putting on this event," said Cummings. "I think everyone felt a sense of pride in holding this event, not only because of what it meant to our wounded soldiers, but also because of the hard work and effort it took to put together."
The Marauders certainly had ideal conditions for this inaugural event, which was held in collaboration with the Millersville Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC). A sun-drenched day brought out plenty of fans as the softball tam took to the field for a doubleheader with Slippery Rock.
Preliminary donations had been collected by members of the softball team and coaching staff. The team's expected goal of raising $1,500 was shattered as it racked up nearly $2,700 in support of the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP). "I cannot say enough about the generosity of the donations," noted Cummings. "It shows that people recognize the efforts of our service men and women and that this is a token of thanks in supporting them for the ultimate sacrifices they've made to keep our country free."
The afternoon started out in patriotic fashion with cadets from the Millersville ROTC Color Guard presenting our nation's colors prior to the playing of the Star Spangled Banner. ROTC members contributed heavily to the event as they coordinated the selling of 50/50 raffle tickets and administered a concession stand, which helped raise additional funds for the WWP.
Between games fans were treated to a moving speech that aimed to recognize and thank our service men and women, past and present, for their contributions to the United States of America.
The Marauders took to the field in special camouflaged jerseys, which were provided by the event's primary sponsor, Elizabethtown Sporting Goods. E-Town Sporting Goods also created special t-shirts, which featured a camouflaged Millersville athletics logo, that were available (and still are available) for purchase at the event.
Through game day efforts, the Marauders and the Millersville ROTC were able to raise over $600 in addition to their earlier efforts. In all, donations benefiting the WWP have exceeded $3,300.
The Wounded Warrior Project works to raise awareness and enlist the public's aid for the needs of severely injured service men and women, to help severely injured service members aid and assist each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs. On this day, the Millersville softball team worked to raise awareness and funds for the men and women who continually protect our freedoms.
The day was a booming success thanks in large part to all that helped make it happen. The Millersville softball team offers sincere thanks to the Millersville ROTC, primary sponsor Elizabethtown Sporting Goods, and secondary sponsor Millersville University Dining and Conference Services. Most importantly, coach Cummings and her team wish to thank all of our soldiers, past and present, for the sacrifices they've made that allow us to live in freedom.
Donations can still be made to the Wounded Warrior Project by accessing the Millersville softball WWP page. To donate, click here.
A limited number of the special edition t-shirts that were sold at the event are still available. To inquire about purchasing one of these shirts, contact coach Kathy Cummings at kcummings@millersville.edu. There are shirts left in adult sizes small, medium, and large. The t-shirts are black and feature a camouflaged Millersville logo on the front and "We Support Our Troops" with a yellow ribbon on the back. The t-shirt design can be seen by clicking here. The price is $10 for each shirt, with the proceeds going to the Wounded Warrior Project.
