Millersville, Pa. — Rolling into 2010, the Millersville softball team expected consistent contributions at the plate and in the field from Kelly Fitzgerald and Lindsay Hosier. Needless to say, the Marauders got what they were looking for as Fitzgerald, a sophomore catcher, and Hosier, a senior shortstop led the team in most offensive statistical categories. On Monday afternoon the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) announced that Fitzgerald was selected as the All-PSAC East First Team catcher and Hosier was named to the All-PSAC East Second Team.
The all-conference honors are firsts for both players. Between them, Fitzgerald and Hosier ranked first or second on the team in batting average, hits, doubles, RBIs, total bases, and slugging percentage.
Fitzgerald hit .374 in her second season donning the Black and Gold. She led the ball club with 38 RBIs and also tied a Millersville single-season record in that category. She ranked second on the team in hits (53), doubles (11), and slugging percentage (.514).
The Upper Darby, Pa., native racked up multiple hits in 17 games this past season and she was the only other Marauder besides Hosier to register a five-RBI game.
The Marauder backstop really kick-started her season at the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament in late March. There she collected a pair of three-hit games, with two home runs, and eight RBIs. It was a familiar scene, as Fitzgerald also put forth a stellar effort at the same tournament during her freshman campaign.
A season after picking off 10 runners from her office behind the plate, Fitzgerald picked off four more in 2010 and also nabbed 14 opposing runners that attempted to steal a base on her. She earned weekly recognition from the PSAC earlier this season when she was named PSAC East Player of the Week on Mar. 22.
Hosier made sure that her last season was one for the record books. She shattered a number of Millersville single-season and career records and came close to breaking a number of others.
One of just three Marauders to start all 47 games, Hosier set new Millersville single-season benchmarks in runs scored (51), doubles (16), and stolen bases (26). While she didn't set the single-season mark for hits, she still managed to lead the team in that category with 62. She also bested the team with a .388 batting average. Following her best collegiate season, the Glen Mills, Pa., product ranks atop career lists at the school in runs scored (141), doubles (42), and is tied for the most total bases in program history with 276.
Beyond the career records she did set, Hosier came close to a number of others, clearly cementing herself as one of the best Marauder softball players in the program's 32-year history. She ranks second all-time in at-bats (591), hits (191), home runs (11), and runs batted in (86). She's also third in games played (185) and her 55 stolen bases rank her right up there.
Hosier hit her first career grand slam against West Chester on Apr. 17, and ranked at or near the top of the conference in many offensive stat categories. She led the league in stolen bases, ranked second in runs scored, third in doubles, and fifth in hits. In addition to her impressive showing at the conference level, Hosier ranked 34th in the nation in runs scored per game (1.09) and 35th in stolen bases. She also wound up in the top 100 in NCAA Division II in doubles per game and triples.
Despite a career year where she broke records and saw her previous career-high batting average obliterated by 48 points, Hosier was beaten out for a first team spot by West Chester's Samantha Ingersoll. The Golden Ram shortstop was named PSAC East Athlete of the Year after hitting nearly .500 and leading the conference in home runs and RBIs. Hosier added her first all-conference honor to her first weekly honor, which she earned on Apr. 19 when she was named PSAC East Player of the Week.
Kutztown and West Chester dominated the East Division teams, with the Golden Bears placing six players on the squads and the Golden Rams adding five. East Stroudsburg did not have a player on the first team, but saturated the second team by claiming four of the seven picks. The Marauders had a player on each team, while Shippensburg's lone representative was Hope Cornell on the first team.
The Marauders finished 24-25 this past season and came within a game of qualifying for the PSAC Tournament for the first time in program history. The Marauders future looks bright, however, as Fitzgerald will headline a young sophomore-rich group in 2011.
