Millersville, Pa. - Repetition, hard work and competing against the best are some of the keys to improvement. Nine Millersville baseball players are doing just that over the summer by playing with and against the some of the nation's top college baseball players in various summer leagues.
Ryan McCormick, Brooks Rothschild, Jason S. Long, Ryan Chesler, Adam Boyd, Jeff Heisey, Kasey Cooper, Dan Johnson and newcomer Mike Perez are all making their work on the baseball diamond their own kind of summer job. The mission of the nine is to not only help Millersville baseball improve but to also gain the notice of pro scouts who can be easily spotted throughout the stands with radar guns and notebooks.
McCormick, a 2009 All-PSAC East selection, ripped up the River Valley League last summer and earned an invitation to play for the Columbia Blowfish in the prestigious Columbia League, which is widely regarded as one of the top collegiate summer leagues. McCormick made the switch to shortstop prior to the 2010 Millersville season and led the team with 15 stolen bases. He has appeared in seven of Capital City's 17 games so far.
Columbia has a history that dates back to 1892, and the Coastal Plains League was reestablished 14 years ago and now boasts 15 teams and a total of 21 active Major League Baseball players as alums. To follow McCormick throughout the summer, click here.
Rothschild and Long are both pitching for the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts of the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League. Both heading into their junior seniors, they made significant contributions to the Millersville rotation in 2010. Rothschild was a weekend starter against PSAC East opponents and went 3-1 including a complete game shutout of nationally-ranked Kutztown in the season finale. Long appeared in nine games and started four. He did not allow more than two earned runs in any of his starts.
Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League is an amateur summer wooden bat baseball league comprised of eight teams in the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Region. The Thunderbolts' roster includes players from schools mostly located in Pennsylvania, Maryland and New Jersey. Over 70 of the league's alums are actively playing professional baseball. Chesler, Boyd, Perez, Heisey and Cooper will see plenty of each other as all five are competing in the Kentucky-Illinois Tennessee (KIT) League. Chesler, Boyd and Perez take the field for the Marion Bobcats, and Heisey and Cooper play for the Trade Water Pirates.
The KIT League is a collegiate summer wood bat baseball league featuring teams in seven cities throughout the three states. Play began in the summer of 2005. Heisey and Cooper's squad have won the last two league titles.
This group is a strong representation of the future of the Millersville program. Chesler and Heisey were starters during their first collegiate season, Cooper and Boyd just completed their second seasons, and Perez recently signed his National Letter of Intent to catch for the Marauders next year. Chesler hit .324 in 32 games, and Boyd hit .305 as an everyday outfielder. To follow these Marauders, click here.
Stuck behind former all-region first baseman Derek Kline on the depth chart, Johnson redshirted during the 2010 season, but he is getting plenty of swings with the Blazers. The ACBL is comprised of 13 times from Pennsylvania and New York. Joining Johnson on the Blazers are six players from PSAC schools. Through six games, Johnson has five hits and two RBIs.
