Millersville, Pa. - With cut down day looming and exactly two weeks until the season opener against Assumption, Millersville football held an intrasquad scrimmage Saturday afternoon in front of a sun-baked crowd at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.
The No. 1 defense squared off against the No. 1 offense on seven series and yielded just one touchdown. The second and third string failed to score in its 10 total possessions as well. Bill Shirk and the No. 1 offense was hampered by injuries to the wide receiver position. Matt Egenrieder, Dominic Sanders and Dean May were all held out but none of the injuries should keep them off the field for an extended period of time.
With three of the top four wide receivers out of action, freshmen Austin Warfel and Austin Stein were pressed into action. Warfel took full advantage of his opportunity, hauling in three catches for 81 yards, including a 65-yard reception that set up a field goal opportunity. Jamal Smith finished with two catches for 42 yards including a sliding grab on the sideline. Shirk completed 9-of-16 passes for 139 yards.
The coaching staff heavily recruited the running back position in the offseason, and the depth was on full display Saturday. Newcomer Mike Jones, who ran with the No. 1's, flashed the speed and elusiveness that landed him at Syracuse. Jones was bottled up on two runs but ripped off a 37-yarder for the offenses' only touchdown of the game. He also caught two passes for seven yards.
Matthew Booker, who started several games as a freshman in 2008 but missed all of last season, made his bid for a spot on the team with 56 yards on 12 carries. Barry Surrett Jr. totaled 41 yards on 13 totes. Fateen Brown, Cardoza Jacks and Brandon Gunn also took snaps with the No. 1 unit.
Defensively, Jacob Haines and Brandon Moore recorded sacks and David Rene picked off a pass.
The battle for the starting kicker position continued, and all four kickers had ample opportunity to make a statement. However, each missed a kick and two kicks were blocked. Colby ended the scrimmage with six-straight field goal tries and did not blow the whistle until two-straight kicks were made.
