Lancaster, Pa. – Millersville scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to overtake Seton Hill, and it held on over the final three innings to eliminate the Griffins by a 5-3 score Saturday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Atlantic Regional. The Marauders advance to play the winner of the Mercyhurst/East Stroudsburg game Sunday at 12 p.m.
Millersville scored all five of its runs in two innings, and
Mike McMonagle shook off a rocky start to turn in another quality outing. The junior, who improved to 8-1 and won his seventh straight decision, surrendered two runs in the first and another in the second but quickly settled. He retired the next 10 Griffins to keep Millersville within one run at 3-2.
Chris Edgar jump-started the Marauder rally in the bottom of the sixth with a single down the right field line.
Derek Kline followed with a double to left, putting two runners in scoring position.
Zach Stone registered his team-leading 43rd RBI of the season and second of the game on a sacrifice fly.
With the score tied at 3-3,
Mike August singled in Kline for the go-ahead run. Two batters later,
Mike Perez put the Marauders up by two with a RBI double to right.
McMonagle worked his way into the eighth before handing the ball to
Jason Long. For the second day in a row, Long breezed through the eighth. Long gave way to
Zach Eckley in the ninth, and he notched his 10th save of the year to become just the third player in school history with double-digit saves in a season.
Edgar led Millersville with two hits and two runs scored. Stone drove in a pair, and
Ryan Chesler continued his white-hot postseason. The sophomore catcher is hitting .474 (9-for-19) through the PSAC Tournament and NCAA regional.
Seton Hill was eliminated from the regional and dropped to 33-15 on the season. Millersville boosted its mark to 41-10 and is now within four of the school record for wins in a season. Millersville's game on Sunday can be heard live on
