
Marauder Wrestling Hosts "Shorty" Hitchcock Memorial Classic

Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville wrestling team played host to the ninth annual "Shorty" Hitchcock Memorial Classic Saturday at Pucillo Gymnasium. Brandon Vernalli and Brad Ladd made the deepest runs in the brackets for the Marauders.
Vernalli, wrestling at 165 pounds, won three matches before being bounced in the consolation quarterfinals. He opened with a 16-6 major decision over Neal Grudi of Shippensburg and followed with a 12-5 decision over West Virginia's Christian Chirico.
After being knocked into the consolation bracket, Vernalli notched a 12-9 decision over Dillion Reid of South Dakota State. Vernalli, however, was bounced by Army's Eric Gobin, 8-2.
The heavyweight Ladd reached the championship semifinals and fell one bout short of the third-place match. Ladd stormed through his first two matches with pins in the first two matches. He then edged Shippensburg's Jacob Nale by a 5-4 decision to reach the semis. Eventual champion, Zachery Rey of Lehigh, knocked Ladd into the consolation round, and he was elimited by Virginia Tech's Bobby Lavelle by a 3-1 score.
157-pound Zac Wawrzyniak-Bush also pushed deep into the tournament. He won his first match by a 4-2 decision and then advanced with a medical forfeit. After dropping into the consolation bracket, he fell in a 17-15 shoot out to Daniel Miller.
Steve Hess, in the 149-pound bracket, lost his opening bout but rallied with a 5-4 decision and then advanced past Drexel's Nicholas Maccini by an 11-0 major decision before he was eliminated.
Millersville returns to dual meets on Jan. 26 when it hosts VMI at 7 p.m.
