Millersville, Pa. – In transitioning Millersville wrestling to NCAA Division II for the 2012-13 season, head coach Todd Roberts is attempting to reload his roster with young fresh talent. The Marauders have announced their new freshman class, complete with two state champions and multiple state qualifiers.
Out-of-state, Roberts secured commitments from a pair of Maryland state champions in Austin Wenzlaff and Brandon Ballard. Wenzlaff posted an undefeated senior campaign at 45-0 on his way to a state championship at 160 pounds for Tuscarora High School. Ballard lost just two matches, compiling a 33-2 record and collected a gold medal in the 195-pound weight class as a senior at North County High School.
The other two wrestlers coming to Millersville from outside the state of Pennsylvania are Nick Mancini from Salesianum High School in Middletown, Del., and Tommy Nulty from Freehold, N.J. Mancini placed third in the state at 182 pounds and Nulty took fourth in his regional tournament at 132 pounds.
Roberts also did well with in-state recruiting, landing five PIAA State Qualifiers and six more regional qualifiers. Sam Oberlander from Palmerton High School took eight in the PIAA AA State Tournament as a senior while posting a 39-8 record as a senior in the 120-lb. weight class.
As a two-time PIAA State Qualifier at 138 pounds, Drew Jackson comes to the Marauders from Pequea Valley High School, where he held a 37-9 record during his senior season and was named the Lancaster-Lebanon League Champion and Outstanding Wrestler in 2012.
Fred Alderman (126) qualified for the PIAA State Championships as a senior after a 28-9 record but was unable to compete due to an injury. The other two state qualifiers that will be new to the Marauders in the fall are Wayne Armstrong and Jason Dombrosky.
Armstrong qualified in the AAA state tournament at 138 pounds and totaled a 40-5 record for Interboro High School as a senior, while Dombrosky qualified in AAA at 145 for Spring-Ford. His record as a senior was 36-14.
Millersville also has six new regional qualifiers in Wink Charles, Dane Woodruff, Chase Brown, Shane Hughes, Nick Lucchesi and Devon Fraker. Charles, wrestling for Solanco, was 36-9 as a senior and was the L-L League Champ at 132 pounds. Woodruff was fourth in the AA North East Regional at 152 pounds wrestling for Sullivan County High School. His record during his senior season was 31-8.
Brown was a teammate of Dombrosky at Spring-Ford, where he used a 30-13 record as a senior to qualify for the regional championship tournament at 113 lbs. Wrestling at Bensalem, Hughes went 31-7 as a senior at 152 lbs. Lucchesi, from York Suburban, was 35-3 at 285. Fraker comes to Millersville from Big Spring after wrestling at the 132-lb. weight class. He was 39-7 during his senior season.
Two other newcomers announced by Roberts were Kyle Loeb and Dave Forte. Loeb's career highlight was third place at the Manheim Central Holiday Tournament in the 126-pound weight class and a 34-8 record for Garnet Valley. Forte, a teammate of Armstrong's at Interboro, was 40-2 as a 145-pounder and won a sectional championship.
