West Chester, Pa. - Millersville's women's tennis team had gone a decade since winning a match in the PSAC Team Championship--until Tuesday afternoon. The Marauders defeated West Chester, 5-4, to advance to the PSAC Team Championship Semifinals in the team's first PSAC Team Championship win since 2002-03.
Millersville got started in doubles play against the Golden Rams, taking two of the three matches. The tandem of
Melissa Plowman and
Kelsey Waite got the team started with an 8-0 shutout of Brittany Counts and Alison Fetter.
Nicole Daacke and
Alexandra Heller picked up the second win of the day for the team with an 8-5 victory over Jessica Marascio and Heather Hidalgo, moving the teams to singles play with the Marauders holding a 2-1 advantage.
The Marauders fell into a hole in the singles play, as the Golden Rams won the first three matches that finished. Those three losses left Millersville staring at a 4-2 disadvantage, but the away team wouldn't go away. The team came back strong with three consecutive victories to pull off the upset.
Plowman got the team back in the win column, defeating Counts by twin scores of 6-3, 6-3.
Tori Davis finished next, scoring a two-set victory over Haley Wissinger by tallies of 7-6, 6-2. Daacke's match finished last, as she battled Jami Dumler. Dumler took the first set, 6-3, before Daacke responded with a second-set win of 6-2. Daacke sent the Marauders through to the PSAC Semifinals with a 6-3 win in the third and deciding set, delivering the team its first win in PSAC postseason play since 10 years ago.
The win takes Millersville to 8-11, while ending the Golden Rams' season at 13-9. The Marauders now advance to the PSAC Semifinals against the PSAC West's top seed, California (Pa.).
