Stone Rescues Marauders in Bottom of the Ninth

Box Score Johnstown, Pa. - Chris Murphy was cruising toward his third no-hitter of the season Friday against Gannon, but the Golden Knights rallied with five runs in the ninth to tie the game. Zach Stone, however, kept Millersville's PSAC Tournament hopes alive with a walk-off single and 6-5 victory.

Murphy held the Golden Knights (24-19) without a hit over 7.2 innings. Millersville (38-15) appeared in control with a 5-1 lead and the PSAC East Pitcher of the Year on the mound. Dylan Schwegler led off the top of the ninth with a single, and Murphy helped the Golden Knight's by hitting the next two with pitches. Nico Balldelli chased Murphy from the game with a two-run double, and reliever Adam Zipko (2-2) could not escape the jam, either. he surrendered a two-run single that plated the tying run.

With the score knotted a 5-5, Millersville used some small ball to pull out the victory. Freshman Tyler Orris, who has now had a hand in three walk-off victories this season, led off with a four-pitch walk and promptly stole second base to put himself in scoring position. Evan King bunted Orris to third base.

With two outs, Stone, the PSAC East Player of the Year, lined a 1-1 pitch into right center, scoring Orris and giving the Marauders a match-up with PSAC East foe West Chester later Friday evening.

Millersville's tried-and-true formula of scoring early and letting Murphy do the rest was in action until Gannon's late charge. The Marauders put up three runs in the first inning on a two-run single from Kurt Seiders and a Jeff Heisey sacrifice fly. The lead extended to five in the third when Jeremy Musser and Stone led off with back-to-back hit-by-pitches and Dan Johnson drew a walk to load the bases. Seiders collected his third RBI by drawing a walk and another run scored on Heisey's ground out.

Seiders went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Murphy struck out six, walked none and gave up four hits in 8.2 innings. Zipko earned the win, recording one out.
