2013 All-PSAC Men's Golf Teams
Lock Haven, Pa. - Robert Coyne can add another accolade to his already illustrious junior season: All-PSAC First Team. Coyne landed the all-conference honor on Wednesday and became the first Marauder golfer to earn the recognition since 2008.
Earlier in the week Coyne was recognized by the Golf Coaches Association of America as one of 13 golfers to be named PING All-Atlantic Region. It is Coyne's first All-PSAC award as he was one of just two golfers on the All-PSAC First Team to capture the honor for the first time.
At the PSAC Championships in the fall, Coyne placed third overall and became Millersville's best finisher at the conference championships since 2004 with his 2-under-par score. Scott Micklewright was the last Marauder to place better than Coyne at the PSAC Championships when he was the runner-up in 2004.
In the regional setting, the Downingtown native was just two strokes away from becoming the Black and Gold's first Atlantic/East Super Regional Champion since Chad Shulze in 2000. A runner-up finish at the regional qualified Coyne for the national championship. He is now only the second Marauder in school history to reach the NCAA Division II Championship.
Indiana (Pa.) junior Zack Kempa, who topped Coyne by one stroke at the regional, took home PSAC Golfer of the Year recognition, while Cameron Zbrzenzj of Gannon was honored as the PSAC Freshman of the Year. Peter Coughlin of California (Pa.) was the conference's Coach of the Year.
Coyne saw a drastic improvement in his play from his sophomore year. During the season the Downingtown native registered six top-10 finishes and victories at the Mercyhurst Invitational and the Dr. Edwin B. Cottrell Invitational. In contrast, during the 2011-12 season, Coyne only had two top-10 finishes and his average score was nearly six shots higher than this year.
Coyne heads into his final year as a Marauder with every one of his fellow teammates also returning. After placing fifth out of 20 teams at the NCAA Atlantic/East Super regional, the Millersville men's golf program certainly has high expectations heading into next year.
