West Chester, Pa. - Millersville field hockey is headed to the PSAC Championship for the third season in a row. The Marauders earned the berth into the title game with Friday's 2-0 win over Shippensburg.
Millersville (17-2) has now defeated Shippensburg (15-4) in each of the last three PSAC Tournament meetings, and Millersville has now score a shutout in all five of its PSAC Tournament wins since 2012. The Marauders draw top-seeded West Chester in Saturday's title game, which will start at 2:30 p.m. from Vonnie Gros Field in West Chester. The Marauders are aiming for the program's first back-to-back PSAC Championships since 1985-86.
Against Shippensburg, the Marauders received an early goal from
Alicia Youtz in the ninth minute and a second half insurance score from leading scorer
Katelyn Zapp. Millersville's defense was primed for the playoff game and did not surrender a single shot to the No. 3-ranked team in Division II. It was the second time in the last three games that Millersville held its opponent without a shot and a corner.
Youtz's fourth goal of the season was set up brilliantly by a hustling
Champayne Hess. Hess picked up a loose ball at midfield and carried to the top of the circle where she pushed a pass past a drawn out Alley Mooney. Youtz untangled herself from the Ship keeper and buried the shot into an empty cage.
Nursing a one goal lead, Millersville spoiled Shippensburg's only penalty corner of the entire game in the 47th minute. Just 52 seconds later, Zapp struck for the 15th time this season. Several players from both teams, including Mooney, battled for the ball just in front of the cage. When the ball popped free, Zapp quickly tapped it into the goal.
Lauren Gerhart was credited with the assist.
Millersville totaled six shots and four penalty corners in the game against a Shippensburg club that ranked No. 2 in the nation in goals against average.
Millersville and West Chester met in the 2012 title game and the 2013 semifinal. The clubs split the two regular season meetings. Millersville won at home in double overtime by a 3-2 score, and West Chester scored a 2-1 home win in overtime on Oct. 22.
