Box Score Millersville, Pa. - The buzzer-beating defeat is the cruelest of defeats--especially when it ends a season. Millersville has become all too accustomed to that experience as for the second season in a row, it was eliminated from the PSAC Tournament on a last second shot. On Saturday in first round action, East Stroudsburg's Ryann Fiascki hit a 3-pointer with 1.9 seconds left that downed Millersville, 49-48.
Only 16 seconds before Fiascki's three,
Sabina Mehmedovic broke a 46-46 tie with a buzzer-beater of her own. With the shot clock expiring, Mehmedovic hit a right-handed runner that kissed off the glass. East Stroudsburg (15-12) called timeout to plan its final possession. Millersville (15-12) kept the Warriors out of position to score and collapsed on Jessica Martin when she received the ball in the paint. Martin's only option was to kick the ball out. She found Fiascki, who launched the game-winner from the left wing.
Saturday's loss was the fifth by one possession this season and marked only the second time since 2001 that Millersville has been eliminated in the first round of the PSAC Tournament. East Stroudsburg, meanwhile, scored its first tournament victory since 2007.
A physical, uptempo game resulted in both teams struggling to score. Millersville shot 34.5 percent from the field and ESU shot 30 percent. The difference came from behind the arc and at the line where ESU made six threes and Millersville made just 3-of-11. The Marauders managed to hit only 5-of-15 free throws. ESU scored just 19 points in the second half after holding a 30-28 lead at halftime.
Carly Gallagher led Millersville with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds and
Celeste Robinson added 11.
Millersville did not capture its first lead (35-33) until
Shelby Reimer's 3-pointer with 16:43 left in the game. Mehmedovic's bucket at the 15:33 mark put Millersville up by six--its largest lead of the game--but Millersville went the next seven minutes without a point. Still, the game was tied at 39-39 when Gallagher ended the drought with a free throw. The lead changed hands three times and the game stood tied three other times over the final eight minutes, with neither team holding a lead of more than two.
ESU held a 44-42 advantage with 4:33 left when Robinson scored on a drive. Michelle Boggs answered immediately for ESU with a layup of her own. Neither team scored again until Gallagher retied the game at 44 with 1:21 left. That set the stage for the down-to-the-wire finish.
While East Stroudsburg advances to play top-seeded Bloomsburg on Tuesday, Millersville's season comes to a close with a 15-12 record. Coach
Mary Fleig's teams have won 15 or more games in 17 consecutive seasons. The Marauders are expected to return all but
Senada Mehmedovic from this year's roster.
