High School Track and Field Meet Renamed in Honor of Cy Fritz

Millersville, Pa. - Eugene "Cy" Fritz was honored at Millersville's high school track and field meet Friday at Biemesderfer Stadium for his service and support to Millersville athletics. The event was renamed the Millersville Cy Fritz Track and Field Open.

A 2001 Millersville Hall of Fame inductee, Cy's contributions to Millersville University athletics during his distinguished career are extensive and varied. As men's cross country head coach from 1969 to 1985, he set a standard of excellence. He led the team to a 126-16-1 dual record and guided the Marauders to IC4A titles in 1978 and 1981, and the PSAC championship in 1979. The 1981 campaign culminated in a NCAA Division II Championship.

Eight Marauders earned All-America honors during Fritz's cross country career. He was selected as NCAA Division II Coach of the Year in 1981 and received top regional coach honors in 1984.

In track and field, he guided the Marauders for five years (1970-74). In his first season, he led the Black and Gold to a PSAC Championship. Five Millersville athletes earned All-America status under his direction. He stayed with the program as an assistant coach from 1975 to 1982.

Fritz was also served in the Millersville athletics administration and since his retirement, he has continued in an active role as a volunteer at Millersville-hosted track and field meets and as a voting member of the Millersville Athletic Hall of Fame committee.
