Box Score Butler, Pa. - Zach Stone has spent the last four season's coming through in the clutch for Millersville baseball. With the bases loaded in the 11th inning of a 2-2 PSAC Tournament game against Slippery Rock, Millersville had the right man at the plate. Stone rocketed a fly to center, allowing
David Summerfield to score the game-winning run.
The win advances Millersville into the PSAC Tournament semifinals against Mercyhurst on Friday. The Marauders totaled 13 hits against Slippery Rock but played come-from-behind the entire game. Stone's RBI double in the sixth sparked a two-run inning that erased a 1-0 deficit. Millersville improved to 7-1 in extra-inning games and 9-2 in one-run games.
Stone went 2-for-5, scored a run and drove in a pair.
Dan Stoltzfus recorded two hits and plated Millersville's second run in the sixth.
David Summerfield reached base four times with two singles and two walks.
Tyler Orris went 3-for-5 with a walk and scored on Stone's sixth-inning double.
Chris Murphy received a no decision after seven strong innings, allowing two runs on six hits. The Marauder bullpen was lights-out.
Matt Binder pitched a perfect eighth, striking out PSAC West Player of the Year Will Kengor.
Adam Zipko faced the minimum in three innings of nearly perfect relief work and improved to 6-0 on the season.
Slippery Rock struggled to muster offense against Millersville's pitchers. Kengor scored the game's first run in the sixth after leading off with a single. Murphy was called for a balk when his cleat got stuck in the turf mound on a pick-off move to first. Kengor then advanced to third on a ground out. He scored when a Murphy pitch hit home plate and bounced high against the backstop screen.
The Marauders answered in the bottom of the inning when Orris and Stone singled and doubled. Stoltzfus singled to drive in Stone, and
Kurt Seiders drilled a double down the left field line. Pinch runner
Reid Anderson appeared likely to score but he lost his footing rounding second was held at third. The Marauders eventually left the bases loaded and took a 2-1 lead into the seventh.
That lead was erased in a hurry when Kevin Jovanovich took Murphy deep over the wall in right center. Murphy worked through the rest of the frame without further damage and let his bullpen do the rest.
Millersville put a runner on base in the eighth and ninth but failed to score. Summerfield started the 11th with a single to left.
Alex Ramsay put down a crucial two-out bunt to move Summerfield into scoring position. McCormick singled to left, and Orris walked to load the bases. That set the stage for Stone's one-out sacrifice fly.
Slippery Rock's John Kovalik shouldered the loss despite keeping Millersville off the board for 3.1 innings.
Millersville, ranked No. 23 in Division II, is now 35-13 overall. Slippery Rock's season ends with a 25-20 record. Mercyhurst, with a 29-12 record, is a familiar postseason foe for the Marauders. Mercyhurst knocked the Marauders out of the PSAC Tournament in both 2011 and 2012. After the first day of the tournament was postponed, the remainder of the tournament is single elimination format.
