Erie, Pa. – A 17
th minute goal was enough offense for the men's soccer team as it shutout the Bloomsburg Huskies 1-0 on Friday afternoon to advance to its first PSAC Championship game since 2011. The Marauders relied on the PSAC's top-ranked defense and goalkeeper keeping the Huskies off the board for 90 minutes.
Just 17 minutes into the match, a goalie kick sent from
Kohl Orner aided by the wind found an open
Jaime Vazquez who chipped the ball past Husky keeper Jared Ott. The goal marked Vazquez's 19
th of the season, which ranks him third in all of Division II. The goal also cemented the Tulpehocken product's name in the program record books with the third-most goals scored in a season. Vazquez needs four more goals to tie the Marauder record holder Sean Szerba who scored 23 in 1998.
The Marauders controlled the possession through most of the first half as they out-shot Bloomsburg by a 5-3 margin. Millersville nearly added an insurance effort in the 44
th minute when
Ryan Phelps sent in a dangerous corner kick attempt, but a Husky defender cleared the ball preventing further damage.
Millersville ramped up its offensive pressure in the second period and it nearly paid off in the 59
th minute. In a span of a 1:05, the Marauders fired four shots on goal, two of
Jaxson Burns' attempts were blocked and Jared Ott saved
Devin Rediker's final attempt.
Bloomsburg's best opportunity to equalize occurred at the 61:26 mark when Anthony Cerda fired a shot from 35-yards out, but the gusting wind caused the ball to dip into the waiting arms of
Kohl Orner. The Huskies only managed one more shot attempt in the final 29 minutes.
The Marauders finished the match with a 17-9 advantage in shot attempts and had three more corner kicks than Bloomsburg. Goalkeeper
Kohl Orner recorded six saves enroute to his 10
th shutout of the season.
Millersville is slated to play Slippery Rock in the PSAC Championship match after The Rock defeated Mercyhurst, 1-0 on Friday. The Marauders and Slippery Rock met on Sept. 19 with Millersville recording the 2-1 victory. Game time from the Mercyhurst Soccer Field is slated for 1 p.m.
