Box Score Butler, Pa. - Wednesday's PSAC Tournament opener may have been
Brandon Miller's first-ever conference tournament start, but it certainly didn't look like it. The sophomore was struck out a career-high 12 batters and threw his first nine-inning complete game while the bats provided plenty of offense in an 8-0 victory over California (Pa.), the No. 4 seed from the Western Division.
Miller (11-1) surrendered just two hits and a walk for his 11th consecutive victory, which pulls him within one of the single-season school record set by
Chris Murphy in 2013. The offensive charge was led by
John Brogan's three hits, one of which was an opposite field, two-run homer in a five-run fifth inning.
Dan Stoltzfus drove in the team's first three runs of the game, boosting his season RBI total to 71, which is just one shy of the school record held by Matt Knox (2000).
The first at bat of the game was an omen for the Vulcans. Miller sat down the leadoff hitter with a three-pitch strikeout and went on to retire the first 15 batters he faced. The no-hitter was finally broken up in the top of the sixth, but it mattered little. Miller retired the side and allowed only two more base runners the rest of the way. He ended the game himself, too, taking a liner off his body, picking up the ball and tossing it to first for the final out.
Millersville opened the scoring in the third inning with some two-out magic. With Stoltzfus at the plate and runners on the corners,
Chas McCormick broke to steal second just as Stoltzfus laced a single to center.
Dan Neff scored easily from third, and McCormick, without breaking stride around second, sprinted home for the second run.
The chased starter Justin Taylor from the game in the fifth inning.
David Summerfield led off with a double, and Stoltzfus singled him home. Brogan followed with a two-run blast, and one batter later,
Mitch Stoltzfus cranked his fourth homer of the season for a 7-0 Marauder lead. McCormick drove in another run in the eighth for good measure.
Orris reached base four times and scored twice. Summerfield and Stoltzfus both had two hits as well.
Miller, an All-PSAC East First Team selection on Tuesday, has now allowed just one earned run over his last four starts spanning 18 innings. He's also struck out 23 and walked two in that span. He's pitched at least six innings in 10 consecutive starts and now leads the team with six complete games.
The No. 17 Marauders advance and play No. 8 Seton Hill in a battle of nationally-ranked teams and a rematch of last season's NCAA Atlantic Region final. The second round game starts Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
