Butler, Pa. - Three-time PSAC East Pitcher of the Year
Chris Murphy matched-up against the PSAC's most prolific offense and did just what
Chris Murphy has done for the last three seasons. He overcame a rocky first inning to allow just four hits in a complete game, and
Tyler McDonald's three RBIs drove a Marauder offense to an 8-4 victory over No. 8 Seton Hill.
No. 17 Millersville (40-9) won the match-up of nationally-ranked clubs, ending a four-game skid against the PSAC West program--a team that had ended Millersville's season in 2013 and 2014. The Griffins received a three-run homer from PSAC West Player of the Year Nick Sell in the bottom of the first, but Murphy silenced the Griffins over the final eight innings, allowing just two more while striking out eight. It was Murphy's 11th win of the season, which ties him with teammate
Brandon Miller for the league lead.
Millersville's lineup buoyed Murphy during his early struggles.
Dan Stoltzfus staked the Marauders to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when he doubled in
David Summerfield and
Chas McCormick--his 71st and 72nd RBIs of the season. With that swing Stoltzfus became Millersville's single-season RBI record holder, passing Matt Knox's record that was set in 2000.
The 2-0 lead was quickly wiped out by the Griffins. In the bottom of the first, Pat McCarthy led off with a slow roller to second. Anthony Fanelli was hit by a pitch, and Sell blasted a three-run homer to right center. But the Marauders answered immediately in the second with a long ball of their own.
Mitch Stoltzfus drew a leadoff walk, and senior
Tyler McDonald took the lead back with his eighth homer of the season.
Dan Neff followed with a single, stole second base and later scored from third when McCormick put down a two-out bunt down the third base line.
Neff jump-started the offense again in the fourth with a single and steal.
Tyler Orris drove him in with a single and then followed Neff's lead by stealing second and scoring on a Summerfield single.
Seton Hill's only other run came on a solo homer from catcher Chris Miller to the short porch in right field. Millersville got that run back the very next inning when McDonald drove in
Jeremy Musser with a sacrifice fly.
Murphy escaped a two-on, one-out jam in the eighth and then sat down the Griffins in order in the ninth for his first career postseason victory. Seton Hill's No. 6-9 hitters went a combined 0-for-15 against Murphy.
Millersville totaled nine hits. Summerfield had two and added a walk to reach base three times.
The Marauders now face the winner of the Mercyhurst/Slippery rock elimination game Friday at 3:30 p.m.
