Millersville knocks off top-seeded ESU; headed to PSAC championship game

East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania - It's not often that a field hockey game is decided in the first two minutes, but that's exactly what happened in East Stroudsburg Saturday in the PSAC semifinal between fourth-seeded Millersville and the top-seeded Warriors. Millersville's Aliza Mizak scored 81 seconds into the first half, and the Marauders beat No. 1 ESU 1-0 to advance to the PSAC Championship for the fifth consecutive season.

Margaret Thorwart took the first shot of the game 1:19 in, a shot that ESU goalkeeper Danielle Ard was able to save. But Ard was not able to stop the next shot she faced, as Mizak recovered the rebound and sent Millersville into the lead with the only goal of the game.

The victory sends the Marauders to the championship game where they will take on Shippensburg. It is the Marauders' first win against a No. 1 team since they took down Shippensburg in the PSAC title game in 2013.

Not only was Mizak the only player to score, but she was one of the few to even have a legitimate scoring chance. After the two early shots on goal, Millersville did not attempt a single shot on goal until Carly Castle nearly scored in the 63rd minute. The Marauders finished the day with only three shots on goal, with two of those coming in the first 90 seconds and a 60-minute break in between Mizak's and Castle's shots. The Warriors managed merely five shots total, only one of which was on goal.

In the 59th minute, Robin Stevenson had chance to score, but Marauder goalie Samantha Rumler was there to make her lone save of the game.

Earlier in the day, Shippensburg defeated West Chester 2-1 to move on to the PSAC championship. Ship is the No. 2 team in the country, giving Millersville a look at both of the top-ranked teams in this final weekend. West Chester's loss and Millersville's win could be all the Marauders need to lock up the third and final regional spot. Whichever team does so will move on to the NCAA tournament. Millersville last won a conference championship in 2013 and has won three all-time including the 1985 and 1986 back-to-back wins.

Sunday's  title game will be held at East Stroudsburg and will start at 1 p.m.
