Millersville baseball announces recruiting class

Millersville, Pennsylvania. - On the heels of a NCAA Division II runner-up finish and a fourth-consecutive PSAC Eastern Division title, Millersville baseball coaches Jon Shehan and recruiting coordinator David Baker restocked the roster by signing seven high school seniors. The class includes four pitchers, an infielder, catcher and outfielder.

In nine seasons at Millersville, Shehan's club has achieved an unprecedented level of success, totaling five NCAA Atlantic Regional appearances, two championships and six PSAC Eastern Division crowns. Much of that has come through recruiting and developing high school players. In 2016 alone, senior Tyler Orris and juniors Brandon Miller and Reid Anderson were selected in the MLB Draft, and Jim McDade signed a contract with the San Diego Padres. All four were recruited out of high school. While Baker is new to the position of recruiting coordinator, he has been a member of the program since 2009.

"When Ryan Forrest left this year, David Baker assumed the duties of recruiting coordinator," said Shehan. "He did a great job completing the 2017 class. I want to thank him and Ryan for their hard work evaluating talent, making contacts, and setting up visits. This process continues to get more and more daunting. It takes an organized person who is willing to work extremely hard to put together a class that is capable of holding up to the standard that we are used to here at Millersville. This is a class we are extremely excited about. The 2017 class is talented and is made up of a core of excellent pitching prospects, and two very good position players that can both play defense and hit. More importantly, this group possesses the off-the-field makeup that has put us in a position to be successful in past years."

The high school seniors signed will enroll at Millersville in the fall of 2017.

The class includes: right-handed pitcher Andrew Mayhew (Pennridge High School), outfielder Mark Miller (Mooresville High School (N.C.), left-handed pitcher Matt Stevenson (North Penn High School), catcher Luke Trainer (Conestoga Valley High School), right-handed pitcher Aidan Welch (Roman Catholic High School), left-handed pitcher Christian Wingard (Millersburg High School) and infielder/pitcher Jacob Paulishak (Frederick, Md./Middletown)

RHP · 5-8 · 135 · R/R

Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge

About Mayhew: Already a two-time All-Suburban One selection as a junior, Mayhew is a hard-throwing right-hander. He plays his high school baseball for Tom Nuneviller and for Mike Connors of the PA Shockers. He was a Big 26 participant in 2016.

Shehan on Mayhew: "Andrew doesn't quite fit the mold physically. But that is actually what we like about him. His attitude is, 'You think I can't compete because I am small? Watch this.' Every time we watched him pitch, he competed his tail off. He is fun to watch pitch. He is the guy that wants the ball in a big situation. His stuff is excellent. His fastball sits in the upper-80's and has been up to 91. His slider is already an above average pitch and has been up to 81. Andrew also comes from a great family and is an excellent student."

Mayhew on Millersville: "I love the campus. It felt like home when I visited. The coaches and baseball are great. They know how to win games."

Mayhews's Goals: "My goals are to develop my skills to become a better player and a better person."

13195MARK MILLER
OF · 6-1 · 195 · R/R

Mooresville, N.C./Mooresville

About Miller: The Marauders snatched Miller out of North Carolina, the home of some of the top Division II baseball programs in the country. Miller also runs indoor track, so he fits the Marauders' mold of an athletic outfielder. Miller enters his fourth season as a starter for Jeff Burchett's team and was named all-state in 2016. He's a two-time all-conference selection and a 2016 all-county pick. He is the winner of the school's Principle's Character Award. He also plays for Philip Loftin's Dry Pond Blue Sox.

Shehan on Miller: "Mark is our first commitment from North Carolina that I am aware of. Some might say 'how good could he be if he is coming from North Carolina and he could have gone to a lot of schools in better weather?' Make no mistake about it, this kid can play. He hits and he runs and plays very good defense in the outfield. More importantly, he is a perfect fit for our program from a makeup standpoint. He has grit and aggressiveness at the plate and on the bases, and also brings that 'yessir, no sir' type of attitude off the field. We are really excited to have him."

Miller on Millersville: "After attending a baseball camp I was very impressed with the coaching staff and the team. Following that, I visited the campus and knew it was where I wanted to be."

Miller's Goals: "My baseball goals are to contribute to an already outstanding baseball team and university. Also, I'd like to become more selfless and relentless as a baseball player, teammate and person."

13197MATT STEVENSON
LHP · 6-6 · 215 · R/R

Lansdale, Pa./North Penn

About Stevenson: Stevenson is a 6-6 right-hander from a powerhouse high school program. He was named All-Suburban One Third Team with a 2.25 ERA in 2016 playing for Kevin Manero and was a member of the state championship team in 2015. He was a Big 26 participant last season. Stevenson also plays basketball, and is a member of the Kulpsville Comets coached by Eric Schuster.

Shehan on Stevenson: "Matt comes from a program that has gotten it done the past couple years. North Penn has won a few state titles and seems to always be in the mix coming out of a tough district that is always loaded with talent. For that reason, Matt has already pitched in some big games. He fits the mold: 6-6, athletic, and a very good student. A good comparison for us is Jim McDade. Matt is a mid80's arm that fills up the zone and has tight spin on a potentially above average breaking ball. He also has a very good change-up. His delivery and stuff project out to be a starter."-

Stevenson on Millersville: "I chose Millersville because of its strong academic reputation in my intended major and the course that were offered. From the moment I stepped on campus it felt like home. I also really liked the strong baseball program that Coach Shehan has built, and I wanted to be a part of that."

Stevenson's Goals: "I want to work hard to build strength and increase velocity so I can contribute to the team. I also hope to build long-lasting friendships with the team."

C · 6-0 · 185 · L/R

Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley

About Trainer: Playing for Jeffrey Craig at nearby Conestoga Valley, Trainer was an All-Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 2 pick as a sophomore. He also plays for the Mid-Atlantic Rockies coached by Mike Chroniger and plays basketball at CV.

Shehan on Trainer: "Luke is a local product. We have had some really good players come from our backyard including current catcher Mitch Stoltzfus. Luke, like Mitch, is not just a quality defensive catcher. He can swing the bat. We are, however, excited about the fact that he has excellent hands, blocking ability, and a strong, accurate arm. Most importantly, he is the type of leader that you want to take care of a pitching staff with 18 different personalities. Catchers have to have leadership ability, and Luke is one of those guys who is going to make our staff better."

Trainer on Millersville: "I chose Millersville because I think it is the best school and baseball program for me to grow as an individual."

Trainer's Goals: "My No. 1 goal is to work toward continuing my baseball career at the next level after college, and also furthering my baseball IQ and sharpening my skills as a player. Ultimately, as a team, I want to win a national championship."

RHP · 6-3 · 195 · R/R

Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic

About Welch: Welch was named All-Catholic League, all-city honorable mention and selected to the Carpenter Cup as a member of Anthony Valucci's Roman Catholic program. He also runs cross country and plays baseball for Ed O'Melia's Blue Sox Baseball club.

Shehan on Welch: "Aidan has had a lot of success in the prestigious Philadelphia Catholic League. He is a mid-80's guy with four pitches in the zone. His fastball has a lot of movement and he throws a lot of strikes. His body also has some upside being 6-3 and a multi-sport athlete. Biology is a tough major. But throughout the process, he showed that he loves a challenge; he loves to work hard both on the field and off. That was the most impressive thing about him. I think he is going to be a great fit with our team from a grit standpoint."

Welch on Millersville: "I chose Millersville because it gives me a great opportunity to get a good education and further my baseball career. I was also impressed with the camaraderie and work ethic of the baseball team."

Welch's Goals: "My goals are to achieve my bachelor's degree in biology, win a national championship and achieve my potential as a student and as a pitcher."

13201CHRISTIAN WINGARD
LHP · 6-1 · 175 · L/L

Millersburg, Pa./Millersburg

About Wingard: A three-sport star in baseball, basketball and football, Wingard has piled up awards in all three spots over his first three-plus years at Millersburg. On the diamond, he was selected to the Big 26 in 2015. He was named The Sentinel Male Athlete of the Year and baseball co-player of the year in 2016, and is a two-time All-Tri-Valley First Team selection. He helped the Corey Keim coached team to a District 3 championship in 2016 and a runner-up finish in 2015. He was also a multiple-time all-league selection as a basketball player and football player. He as The Sentinel Co-MVP, he quarterbacked Tri-Valley to a league runner-up finish in 2014, and has earned postseason awards on both sides of the ball. As a basketball player, he was a first team selection and helped the team to a PIAA District 3 runner-up finish and a PIAA State Tournament quarterfinal berth in 2015.

Shehan on Wingard: "Left-handed pitching is always at a premium. We have had our eye on Christian for a few years now. He reminds us a lot of Chas McCormick on the baseball field—but as a pitcher, not a position player. Christian is a winner. He is a competitor and has performed on the football field, basketball court, and on the mound. That is rare anymore. His stuff projects as a starter. He has a mid-80's fastball, a strikeout breaking ball, and a change-up in the zone. His stuff should allow him to compete right away."

Wingard on Millersville: "Coming from a rural area and a graduating class of 54 students, I was looking for a college that I would be comfortable with its student enrollment numbers and provide me a top-notch education. Millersville University has that rural campus feel but is very close to restaurants, shopping and entertainment. I was also looking for a great baseball program where I would be able to continue my career. Millersville has one of the finest, if not the finest, baseball program in the state of Pennsylvania as well as very respected and successful coaches and players. Both my brother and uncle are both Millersville alumni and have always spoken highly of their experiences at Millersville University."

Wingard's Goals: "It is an honor and privilege to have this opportunity to play for Millersville University baseball. I intend to work hard and contribute to the continued success of the program. My goals are to be the best teammate I can be while being the best baseball player I can be. I want to help this team win another championship and help keep Millersville as one of the best college baseball programs in the country."

13552JACOB PAULISHAK
RHP/INFIELDER · 6-3 · R/R

Frederick, Md./Middletown

About Paulishak: A two-way player at Middletown High School and for club team the Mid-Atlantic Rookies. He was recently named preseason all-state, and was an all-area first team selection as a junior. He serves as both a pitcher and infielder.

Shehan on Paulishak: "Jake Paulishak is an athlete. He is going to be able to help us in the infield, at the plate, and on the mound. Last summer I was able to see him play a number of times for the Mid-Atlantic Rookies, who are a perennial power house showcase team in the Mid-Atlantic. He was everywhere—he hit, pitched and played multiple positions for them. We really liked his versatility. He did develop an arm injury last year, but after getting to know Jake, we are more than confident that he will return to the mound even better than before. We are really looking forward to seeing him wear the Black and Gold."

Paulishak on Millersville: "I loved the atmosphere around the school and baseball team."

Paulishak's Goals: "Win a national title."

ISAIAH LOCKETTE
OUTFIELDER · 6-0 · 180 · R/R

Harrisburg, Pa./Steelton-Highspire

About Lockette: A football and baseball player at Steelton-Highspire, he was named All-Mid-Penn Capital Division three times including second team in 2015 and 2016. He represented Pennsylvania in the Big 26 game with Maryland.

Shehan on Lockette: "Isaiah Lockette is one of the fastest recruits we have ever had commit to Millersville. He is on a "Neff level" from a speed standpoint. Even better is the fact that he has a 90 MPH arm from the outfield. Our staff has compared him to Reid Anderson from an athleticism standpoint—great physical tools, and a super athletic frame. We aren't sure what position he will end up playing yet, but it was impossible to pass on him from an athletic standpoint. Last but not least, he is a fantastic student. We expect him to become a leader in the classroom."

Lockette on Millersville: "Millersville has a great baseball program and a relaxing campus."

Lockette's Goals: "Become mentally stronger and develop life skills for after college."
