Quakertown, Pa. – The Millersville softball team used a
Kelsey Campbell three-run homer and a
Jaynie Black RBI single to down Slippery Rock 4-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference tournament opener Wednesday afternoon from Veterans Park. In the nightcap, Bloomsburg plated home a first inning run and preserved the lead for a 1-0 victory over the Marauders.
Millersville got things going early against Slippery Rock as
Heather Lutz reached after being plunked in the elbow and
Megan Hallock worked a six-pitch walk. A batter later,
Kelsey Campbell crushed a three-run homer to dead center field to put the Marauders up 3-0. The Rock starter Brooke Dawson struggled to regain the strike zone and walked both
Raeann Buskey and
Megan McCurdy as
Jaynie Black singled down the right field line to plate Buskey for the 4-0 lead.
Slippery Rock (20-23) tried its best to rally in the bottom of the first with Emily Nagle starting things off with a triple to right field. Caitlin Baxter had an RBI double and Stacy Herzog had a sacrifice fly, to make the score 4-2. Those would be the only runs that either team would score for the remainder of the game.
Brianna Andraos earned the win for the Marauders working all seven innings, while striking out three. Andraos was on top of her game hitting her spots as The Rock left at least one runner on base in each of the final six innings after the two-run bottom of the first.
In their second game of the tournament, the Marauders left two runners, on walks stranded in the top of the first inning. In the bottom half of the inning, the Huskies struck quickly with leadoff hitter Taylor Winkleman hit a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence giving the Huskies the 1-0 lead.
The Huskies threated to add to its lead in the bottom of the third on back-to-back singles, but Millersville was aided by an interference call in the base path to get out of the jam.
In the top of the fourth Millersville received a leadoff single from
Kelsey Campbell.
Maria Spinosa advanced the runner to third on a sacrifice bunt attempt that was fielded by Valerie Caracasses whose throw was high to first.
Raeann Buskey would then hit a shallow fly to right that was caught and Campbell beat the throw home, but the Huskies appealed to third and Campbell was called out for leaving early to keep it a 1-0 game.
Neither team plated home another run as Huskies starter Taylor Parker retired 10 straight from the fourth all the way through two-outs in the seventh when she issued a walk to
Megan McCurdy. Pinch hitter
Melanie Snyder flew out to center field to end the game.
Andraos took the loss and goes to 16-10 on the season. With the loss, the Marauders 27-19 advance to a loser-goes-home situation against West Chester. The Golden Rams were upset in its opening game, 3-1 and first pitch from Veterans Field on Thursday will be at 10 a.m. due to expected rain in the forecast.
