Quakertown, Pa. – The Millersville softball team had an early 1-0 lead, but the Lock Haven Bald Eagles rallied for three runs in the second to propel them to a 5-2 win over the Marauders on Friday from Veterans Field.
Outfielder
Heather Lutz began the game with a single up the middle and scored on a
Kelsey Campbell sacrifice fly in the top of the first. The 1-0 lead was short lived with the Bald Eagles plating home three runs in the bottom of the second. Michelle Holweger homered to left field on the first pitch she saw from
Brianna Andraos. It was only the third home run given up all season long by Andraos, which is the top mark amongst starting pitchers within the PSAC.
The Bald Eagles were helped out by a Marauder error within the inning and carried its 3-1 lead into the third.
Millersville had runners on first and third with only one out in the top of the third, but
Kelsey Campbell and
Maria Spinosa were retired on strikeouts by Lock Haven starter Bekah Slattery to end the frame.
The Bald Eagles added an insurance run on a Slattery RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the fourth and scored another unearned run in the fifth inning to give them a 5-1 lead.
The Marauders attempted to rally in the top of the seventh when
Megan McCurdy hit her second home run of the PSAC Tournament to begin the inning. However, Bekah Slattery was able to settle back in and retired the final three batters of the game for her 21st win of the season.
The loss will potentially end the Marauder season at 28-10, but it was a season filled with accomplishments with Millersville reaching the PSAC Postseason Tournament for the first time in program history and it was 9-7 within the PSAC East. The .562 winning percentage is the team's third best in program history and top mark since the 2013 season when the team had a 30-20 record. The Marauders still have a chance at continuing it's postseason if they can make the top eight teams in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional. Millersville handed current No. 1 team West Chester three of its seven losses on the season, which will surely carry some weight amongst the voters.
The NCAA selection show will be on Monday, May 2 as Millersville Athletics will keep fans up to date on if
Jen Probst's squad qualified for the regional.
If the team does not qualify for the regional tournament, Millersville has a bright future; the team is only expected to lose senior
Brianna Andraos as the rest of the squad was filled with underclassmen. Looking ahead to the 2017 season, the team should have continuity in bringing back most, if not all of the roster, a definite plus for a program moving in the right direction.
