Jamestown, N.Y. - No. 25 Millersville struck first, scoring four runs in the top of the first against top-seeded and No. 7-ranked Mercyhurst. But the Lakers roared from behind with 11 unanswered runs and sent Millersville into the losers' bracket of the NCAA Atlantic Regional, 11-4.
Mercyhurst (38-6) entered the regional leading Division II in slugging percentage and on base percentage and ranked second in average, and that lineup flexed its muscle with 13 hits including home runs from Chris Gonzalez and Sabitino DiNardo. Mercyhurst also took advantage of four Millersville errors, four wild pitches, drew six walks and was hit by three pitches.
The loss moves the Lakers into the winners' bracket semifinal while Millersville takes on Winston-Salem State in an elimination game Saturday at 11 a.m. It was the seventh time since 2011 that Millersville and Mercyhurst met in a regional, and it was Mercyhurst's second win.
Chas McCormick led off the top of the first with a walk and later scored on a sacrifice fly from
Ben Snyder.
Jimmy Cain drove in
Mitch Stoltzfus with a single, and
Manning Brookens boosted the lead to 4-0 on a two-run double down the right field line.
Mercyhurst starter Chris Vallimont, however, kept his team in the game, pitching a 1-2-3 second and escaping jams in the fourth and fifth. Gonzalez' two-run shot in the third gave Mercyhurst life, and in the fifth, momentum swung in Mercyhurst's favor when Millersville's missed out on a scoring opportunity.
Dan Neff led off with a single. On a pick off play, Vallimont sailed the ball down the right field line, and Neff scampered to third. Vallimont, however, recovered to strike out
Mitch Stoltzfus and
Ben Snyder. The Marauders gambled with the left-handed
David Summerfield at the plate, sending Neff on the first pitch to steal home. The catcher DiNardo mishandled the pitch, and while Neff crossed home plate, the umpire ruled that Summerfield had interfered, ending the inning and Millersville's last real scoring chance.
In the bottom of the inning, Mercyhurst scored on a Millersville fielding error, and a Daniel Elliot sacrifice fly tied the game. The floodgates opened in the sixth with starter
Eli Nabholz pulled after 4 2/3. Three Marauder relievers combined to give up seven runs on seven hits, three walks and two hit batsmen the rest of the way. The Lakers took the lead for good in the sixth on a double from Jimmy Latona and a sac fly from Drew Delsignore.
Millersville put the leadoff runner on board four times between the third and seventh innings but pushed past second base only once.
Stoltzfus, Neff and Cain all had two hits.
