Ville falls to No. 11 Edinboro 77-66; Marauders finish season as PSAC runners-up

Indiana, Pa. -- The Millersville Marauders fell to the No. 11 Edinboro Fighting Scots 77-66 in the PSAC Women's Basketball Championship Sunday afternoon. Millersville finished the season as the PSAC Runners-Up which was its best finish since the 2004-05 season.

The Marauders kept up with Edinboro despite the Fighting Scots getting off to an early lead. The Marauders went to work in the paint and finished the first quarter trailing the Fighting Scots by only six points. Two made three-pointers from the Fighting Scots was the only separation between the teams in the opening quarter. Despite playing in a triple overtime game only 24 hours prior to tip-off against Edinboro, Millersville came out aggressive to open the game.

Millersville finished the second half shooting 5-5 including an 8-0 run in the final two minutes of play while Edinboro did not score a point in the final 2:16 of the first half. Redshirt junior Janelle Robinson, freshman Lauren Lister and senior Alayah Hall all hit shots including several acrobatic layups around Edinboro's bigs to take the team's first lead of the game. The Marauders outscored the Fighting Scots 22-13 in the second quarter and they walked into the locker room with a 36-33 lead.

Edinboro fought back in the third quarter after the Marauders built up a five point lead early in the second half. The Fighting Scots finally knotted the game up at 41-41 with 6:14 remaining in the third quarter. However, it appeared momentum swung back in Millersville's favor less than thirty seconds later. Hall drew Ciara Rosten's fourth foul of the game with 5:46 remaining in the third quarter. The reigning PSAC West Athlete of the Year was sequestered on the bench for the majority of the second half.

Unfortunately for Millersville, Edinboro's All-PSAC First Team guard Jontay Walton heated up in the second half. After only scoring two points in the first half, she scored 20 points including three made field goals from downtown in the second half. Walton scored 11 more points than any other player in the second half. Walton's efforts helped the Fighting Scots pull away in the fourth quarter. Furthermore, Edinboro shot 20-23 from the free throw line in the second half to ice the game in favor of the Fighting Scots.

Millersville outscored Edinboro in the paint despite Edinboro's size advantage. However, the Fighting Scots won the battle on the boards as they out-rebounded the Marauders 42-31. Both teams recovered quickly following turnovers as they both only scored 13 points off turnovers.

Hall and Dimoff each scored a team-high 16 points. Hall shot 7-13 from the floor while Dimoff shot 5-10 including 4-8 from the three-point line. Lister finished second on the team with 15 points on 6-14 shooting.

In her final season, Hall led the Marauders to the PSAC Championship while reaching 1,000 career-points. The guard will go down in the record books for her performances this season that earned her PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Year and All-PSAC East First Team honors.

Lister's scoring efforts in the PSAC Championship earned the new freshman scoring record. Lister finished the season with 378 points and topped a Millersville record that stood for 20 years.

Millersville's 18 wins this season was the best since it won 19 games in the 2015-16 season. Originally picked to finish sixth in the PSAC East, the Marauders obliterated expectations as they finished as the PSAC East Third Seed and reached the PSAC Women's Basketball Championship following an away, triple overtime win over No. 8 IUP in the PSAC Semifinals. With the majority of the team only juniors or underclassmen, Head Coach Mary Fleig has a battle-tested foundation that will look to make noise in the postseason again next season
