Hershey, Pa. – After Tuesday’s lengthy three-hour rain suspension of the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Atlantic/East Super Regional, Wednesday’s resumption of play and subsequent championship round saw a frenzied race to the finish. Six teams finished within four shots of qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Wilmington cleaned house at the Hershey Country Club, winning the team championship and having the individual medalist in Paul Tighe, who shot a 4-over-par 217 to capture the title.
The Wildcats, who led wire-to-wire, collected a 910 overall score for a +58 finish. The Wildcats edged second place Indiana (Pa.) by six strokes to be crowned regional champs. Concord, C.W. Post, and St. Thomas Aquinas rounded out the top five teams, which all qualified for the NCAA Championships.
There were as many teams on the outside looking in. Davis & Elkins came one stroke short of St. Thomas Aquinas’ +93 finish by shooting +94. Following D&E, Bluefield State was two shots outside the top five, while Clarion and Dowling were three shots from forcing a playoff. Four strokes away from the NCAA Championships were Massachusetts-Lowell and California (Pa.), which tied for 10th place with a total of 949.
The top two individual qualifiers not with a team were Jacob Barge and Ryan Thomson. Barge, from Fayetteville State, finished in fourth place with a 13-over 226. Thomson finished a shot behind Barge in fifth place, shooting a 227 in the three-day event.
The NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships will be played at the Cardinal Country Club in Louisville, Ky. on May 16-19.
