Millersville, Pa. — With the conclusion of the 2009-10 academic and athletic schedules, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) announced Wednesday that 122 Millersville student-athletes earned the honor of PSAC Scholar-Athlete.
Millersville, which sponsors 22 intercollegiate sports, eclipsed 100 PSAC Scholar-Athletes of the third-straight year, improving upon last year's number of 102. The 122 student-athletes recognized this year are the most during that time frame.
"Competing successfully at the NCAA Division II level and in the PSAC takes a tremendous commitment from student-athletes," said director of athletics Peg Kauffman. "Millersville could not be more proud of these men and women who have achieved a balance between education and athletics. Our top priority is preparing student-athletes for future success, so it is great to see more student-athletes excelling in the classroom each year."
To be eligible for the scholar-athlete awards, student-athletes must earn a minimum 3.25 cumulative grade point average while competing in an intercollegiate varsity sport. Among all of the PSAC institutions, a total of 2,019 student-athletes were honored, surpassing the total of 1,859 from last year and setting a new PSAC record. Each scholar-athlete will be awarded a certificate of distinction.
The men's and women's track and field/cross country teams had the most scholar-athletes led Millersville with the women having 15, and the men 13. Field hockey and softball boasted 12 scholar-athletes apiece, and women's soccer and women's swimming each totaled 11. All three women's golfers that competed in more than one event were named as scholar-athletes. Softball was close behind in percentage of scholar-athletes per roster size with 70.5 percent of its members earning the distinction.
