James Carney ’00 is hailed by former and current Millersville coaches as one of the greatest distance runners the university’s ever produced. Carney opened his record-setting senior season of 1999-2000 with a memorable cross country campaign that included a school record in the 10K of 30:47. After earning NCAA All-East Region honors in 1997, Carney performed the feat again as a senior, finished as the runner-up at the PSAC Championships and achieved All-America status with a 13th-place finish at the NCAA Championships—the second highest finish of any runner in school history.
During his senior track season, he set school records in the indoor mile, 3,000-meter run, 5,000-meter run and outdoor 10,000-meter run. He also won the 5K and 10K at the PSAC Outdoor Championships.
After receiving his bachelor’s degree from Millersville, Carney attended graduate school at Penn State and continued to compete. Carney built himself into one of the nation’s finest 10,000-meter runners. An employee of New Balance, Carney placed fourth at the U.S. Track & Field Championships in 2009 and placed sixth at the 2008 Olympic trials.
Ini Hazatones ’00 was a four-year starter, three-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete, and the only three-time NFHCA/NCAA Division II All-American in Millersville field hockey history. She ranks sixth all-time in career points with 63. After being named NFHCA/NCAA Division II All-America Second Team as a sophomore, Hazatones scored a team-high 11 goals as a junior in 1998, landing first team All-America, All-PSAC First Team and NFHCA All-Academic honors at season’s end.
As a senior, Hazatones again paced the Marauders with 10 goals, and for her efforts, she was named All-PSAC First Team and first team All-America for the second-straight year. At the conclusion of her career, Hazatones was the recipient of the NCAA Division II Woman of the Year award and was a PSAC Fall Top Ten award winner in 1999. Hazatones graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education in 2000 and is now a third grade teacher at St. Edmund’s Academy. Her husband, Ray Zeliznik, graduated from Millersville in 2003. The couple now resides in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Andrew Marshall ’94, a three-time All-PSAC East selection, helped Millersville post an incredible 95-25 record with three PSAC Eastern Division titles, a PSAC Championship and three-straight NCAA Division II Tournament appearances.
As a performer in the postseason, Marshall is unmatched. In NCAA Tournament action, he still ranks as Millersville’s leader in points, field goals made, field goals attempted, 3-point percentage and steals. Marshall concluded his Marauder career with 1,486 points, ranking 13th all-time. He also ranks third in career assists and fifth in career steals. In 2000, Marshall was named as one of the Top 30 players in Millersville history.
Marshall followed his career at Millersville with a professional career in Augsburg Germany and a stint in the United States Army. He completed his bachelor’s degree in speech communications in 1994. Currently, he is the president and CEO of A&M Business Enterprises LLC based in Lancaster, Pa. Marshall and his wife Lisa are the parents of Ashley, Ariana and Isaiah.
After his graduation in 1965, track coach Art Hume called
Joseph Wilt ’65 “the greatest athlete to ever go through Millersville State College.” During a four-year career, Wilt set school records in the javelin, long jump, intermediate hurdles and triple jump. In 1964 and 1965 he won back-to-back PSAC titles in the javelin. His winning throw at the 1965 championships established the school record. Wilt was renowned for his scoring ability at dual meets. In the 1965 season alone, Wilt scored 178 points and finished with 418 for his career—both school records.
Wilt earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial arts in 1965 and went on to teach industrial arts and served as the department chair at Edgar Fahs Smith Middle School before his retirement 1999. Wilt and his wife Jane are the parents of Steven and Michael Wilt and Crystal DellOrfano, who graduate from Millersville 1985. They also have five grandchildren: Emily, Ella and Chase Wilt, and Jenna and Matthew DellOrfano.
Dr. Lauren Witmer Westermann ’01 won more total matches than any women’s tennis player in Millersville history. Including doubles and singles competition, Westermann totaled 198 career victories. She won 90 singles matches, ranking third all-time, and she and Abbey Neff formed the most prolific doubles team in program history. Each season of her career, Westermann won a PSAC singles and doubles title. As a junior and senior, she repeated as PSAC Athlete of the Year and PSAC Tournament MVP.
Also, the Marauders won four-straight PSAC Championships and reached the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals four times.
After receiving a bachelor’s degree in biology from Millersville in 2001, Westermann attended the University of Pennsylvania for a post-baccalaureate program. In 2004 she married fellow Millersville alum Ben Westermann. They welcomed their son, Noah, into the world in 2008, and Lauren graduated from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine that same year. Westermann is currently a third-year resident at the Reading Hospital specializing in OB/GYN.
The
1982 Women’s Lacrosse Team is just the second team ever enshrined in the Millersville University Athletic Hall of Fame, and it holds the distinction of the only Millersville women’s team to win a national championship.
