MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Jimmy Kirk hit a timely home run in the opener, and Matthew Williams provided a key, run-scoring triple in game two as Millersville baseball swept Jefferson by scores of 9-5 and 4-3 on a cold, rainy Wednesday at Cooper Park.
Millersville extended its winning streak to four and improved to 8-4 with the sweep.
In game one, the teams traded runs early and stood tied 5-5 after two innings. Kirk's two-run home run highlighted a three-run fourth inning that proved the difference in the game. Kirk followed a full-count RBI single from Matthew Williams that broke a 5-5 tie.
Joe Morrissey (1-0) quietd Jefferson's bats when he entered in relief in the third. He surrendered three hits and no walks while striking out five in three shutout innings. Freshman Eli Simonton provided a shutout inning, and while Jefferson loaded the bases in the seventh, Gavin Lill fanned three batters and kept the Rams off the board.
Both teams recorded nine hits and drew three walks. Williams and Kirk both drove in three runs.
Millersville again rallied from an early deficit in game two. Aided by an inning-extending error, Millersville scored three unearned runs. After Jay Salsberry's bases-loaded walk pulled Jefferson to within 3-2 in the fourth, Williams led off the bottom of the inning with a triple and scored on a throwing error to extend Millersville's lead.
Ryan Fox allowed one run on two hits and three walks in his first career start. Adam Hajdak (1-0) entered in relief in the fourth and pitched the rest of the way, allowing one run on two hits and a walk while striking out four.
